Unless

Unless

Science is catching up to spirit
the radio tells me.

Humans began
not as building blocks
awaiting assembly
but as code
born to translate.
Mystery molding substance.
Meaning creating form.

Maybe we’re holding the book
upside down
squinting the world
into one-eyed perspective
hopelessly distorted
but familiar
reassuring
suicidal

Unless

Unless indigenous sisters kneel down together
in sacred prayer
redirecting the flow
of the western Michigan wine parade.

Unless earth-colored Idaho girls
cry and hold each other
finding their 15 year old voices to say
we are the future.

Unless one father reappears to his children
in the doorway
a walking miracle
no Border Patrol could stop.

Unless one mother
honors her black community
which bulldozers could not destroy

to say yes
let’s run the public transit system

to say no
armed transit police do not make us safe

to say
join us
join us
join us

let’s ride the rails together
with wholeness
with strength
with wisdom

Unless
Unless

Unless
I wake this morning
to light my candle
with love
to celebrate the darkness
dancing
with the flame
